Whether you have a preformed or a liner type, a pump is a paramount component of any water feature.
Moving water benefits not only your waterscape, but its inhabitants as well. A good system will recirculate the water, distributing its beneficial nutrients to all aquatic life in the water feature. Additionally, moving water prevents stagnation, ensures that oxygen levels remain evenly distributed, and prevents stratification.
Even if your water feature is solely ornamental, installing one still offers benefits. Streams, waterfalls, and fountains are all created with it's use. They can be powerful enough to force water almost anywhere you want it, enabling you to create and customize spectacular water features.
They are available in both submersible and external models. For the smaller water feature (up to 1000 gallons of water), a submersible unit is the more economical and practical option.
A Submersible type can be placed directly in the koi or goldfish feature and require relatively little installation. A submersible model is free of distracting noise, and for smaller ponds a submersible can easily be utilized to drain them (if you hook up a hose to the output flow ).
The unit is sized by gallons per hour (GPH) output at one foot of lift or height. It is recommended that you circulate your body of water at least once every 2 hours. Therefore you will need a size that will ensure that it has at least half the GPH rating as the volume of your koi or goldfish feature in gallons.
For example, if you have a 1000 gallon water feature, you will require at least 500 gallons per hour.
Circulatin is critical for your filter system in order to keep your system clean and healthy. |
