Velvet Disease appears as a very fine yellow or gold or rust colored dust. The gold specs are small and often numerous, usually appearing first on the back of the goldfish, eventually spreading to other areas of the body and gills. The goldfish looks like it was covered in velvet, hence the name. Oodinium is a plant based parasite. It is considered a "Tropical Fish Disease" be cause it is usually found in tropical fish aquariums where the water temperature is 80'ish degrees. This disease is not usually found on pond fish in areas where water temperature only reaches the 70 to 75 degree range. Under the microscope it appears as a teardrop shape with a green gold color due to the chlorophyl that it contains. In the strictest sense this disease is a parasitic form of algae.
