Anchor Worm

Anchor worm will looks like tiny worms about an eighth inch long, trailing from a wound on the goldfish. Often found at the base of the fins but can be found all over the goldfish. Anchor Worms are contagious and should be treated immediately. When an Anchor Worm leaves the goldfish, it will also leave a wound that will probably be the start of ulcers.

To treat this we recommend;   Clout , Trichloricide or Dimilin or Fluke Tabs

Black Smudge Or Soot Like Appearance

The fish appears to have a black smudge or soot like appearance.  This may just be on the fins or cover the entire body.  Rather than the result of diseases, this condition is usually the result of skin damage from ammonia burns or other costic trauma.  This condition will usually clear itself after a few days in excellent water quality and your goldfish should be back to normal

To treat this condition we recommend;  Easy Treat Bacterial or Melafix

Constipation

If your goldfish is having trouble passing feces, or if they are constantly trailing behind a fish, your fish has constipation. This is often caused by a diet without enough variety, or by feeding too many starchy foods, not enough fiber.

Feed your goldfish a diet with more variety and roughage. Some suggestions are live foods, peas, spinach, and tubifex worms. It is also advised that dry goldfish food be moistened in water until it is soft before feeding it to your goldfish. This helps in digestion, and also reduces the likelihood of constipation and other diseases. The problem should clear up in a day or two.

To treat this goldfish condition we recommend;  OSI Goldfish Food

Dropsy

Dropsy in koi and goldfish, this is one of several diseases that is considered fatal.

The goldfish will have raised scales (rather like a pine cone) and eyes bugging out from the head.

A number of conditions may cause localized raised scales but dropsy usually causes the scales to raise over the entire body of the goldfish.

Bacterial dropsy is an infectious disease so treat with an anti bacterial remedy and if possible isolate affected goldfish.

No treatment is recommended for this condition as it is almost always considered fatal.

Excess Mucus

Symptoms: whitish slime, milky looking skin.

Rather than an actual disease process, this condition is more of a symptom of other diseases.  There are various types of protozoa which can cause these symptoms, and they are treated in a similar way. The different parasites are Costia (Ichtyobodo), Cyclochaeta (Trichodina), and Chilodonella respectively, the last being the most resistant of the parasites. Once the infestation has spread to the gills, it is at its most deadly, and could prove fatal to the affected goldfish.

To treat this Goldfish condition we recommend;  Clout or  Trichloracide or  Paracide Green

Fin Rot

This is most common in the fancy varieties of goldfish.  Finrot can occur as a result of an injury, as a secondary bacterial disease , once the fish has been weakened by other diseases, or in some cases, as a primary infection (bacterial) and also from poor water quality such as ammonia burns.

Finrot on goldfish can be the result of a bacterial infection (which causes a more ragged rotting), or as a fungal infection (which rots the tail more evenly and is more likely to produce a white 'edge'). Sometimes, both types of diseases are seen together. Infection is commonly brought on by bad water conditions, injury, poor diet, or wintering fancy goldfish outside.

Finrot starts at the edge of the fins, and destroys more and more tissue until it reaches the fin base. If it does reach the fin base, the fish will never be able to regenerate the lost tissue. At this point, the disease may attack the fish's body directly.

To treat these conditions we recommend; First, make sure there are no parasites by using Paracide Green, then treat with Easy Treat Bacterial , Melafix or Acriflavin.

Fish Lice

These parasites are a kind of crustacean which are capable of swimming from one goldfish to another goldfish. It appears as a very flat, round, transleucent louse. It punctures the goldfish's skin with a poisonous proboscis spine as it holds fast to the fish with its suckers.

The female louse will lay her eggs on the tank or pond bottom or on tank decorations in straight lines where she coats them with a jelly-like substance. There they stay until they are ready to hatch.

To treat this goldfish condition we recommend;  Clout or Trichloricide or Dimilin or Fluke Tabs

______________________

Flip Over

This is commonly thought to occur because of feeding a floating food and the taking of air while the fish is feeding at the surface.  We have found, however, that a more common cause is poor water quality.  When a sudden drop in water quality occurs some goldfish may develop Flip Over condition quickly.  Once this condition takes place, it is extremly difficult to correct and often is irreversable.  Prevention is the key to this problem as you have little chance of correcting it.

Flukes

Gill Flukes And Skin Flukes

These parasites will appear as tiny worms under the microscope, but are not to see at a magnification of 30x or more. Flukes are contagious and should be treated immediately. Gill Fluke eggs are resistant to medications, but the larvae and adults are susceptible.

To treat this goldfish condition we recommend;
Paracide Green , Easy Treat Ich or Fluke Tabs

Fungus

Symptoms: Grey, dirty-grey, or grey-white tufts of cottony material covering areas of the fish's body ... sometimes covering almost all of the fish's skin

The most common of the fungus-type diseases is described here. The material on the fish often appears grey or dirty-grey because algae often grow on this fungus.

Fungus always grows on necrotic tissue and indicates another problem which has compromised the goldfish. Some possibilities are parasites or even an injury due to spawning or due to running into a tank decoration. Whatever the secondary reason, it should be found and taken into account when the goldfish is treated for fungus.

To treat this Goldfish condition we recommend;  PimaFix or  Acriflavin

Ich

Ich is one of the more common afflictions of goldfish. The body and/or fins are covered with tiny white dots.  The goldfish will look as if someone sprinled salt on it.  Left untreated, it can be fatal to your goldfish, and because treatment takes many days to work, every moment counts. Ich is highly contageous.

The condition is easy to spot. The white dots are small and sometimes numerous, about a millimeter each. They are easiest to see on the goldfish's transparent fins. When on the goldfish, medications have no affect on Ich. As the parasite grows, however, it will eventually drop off the goldfish to reproduce. At the bottom of the tank, it will form a cyst (also resistant to medications) and soon hatch into hundreds of baby parasites which will seek a new host goldfish. This process weakens the goldfish and leaves holes in the goldfish's body. A badly afflicted goldfish will likely display rapid gill movements.

To treat this Goldfish condition we recommend;  Paracide Green or Easy Treat Ich

Oodinium Or Velvet

Velvet Disease appears as a very fine yellow or gold or rust colored dust. The gold specs are small and often numerous, usually appearing first on the back of the goldfish, eventually spreading to other areas of the body and gills. The goldfish looks like it was covered in velvet, hence the name. Oodinium is a plant based parasite.  It is considered a "Tropical Fish Disease" be cause it is usually found in tropical fish aquariums where the water temperature is 80'ish degrees.  This disease is not usually found on pond fish in areas where water temperature only reaches the 70 to 75 degree range.  Under the microscope it appears as a teardrop shape with a green gold color due to the chlorophyl that it contains.  In the strictest sense this disease is a parasitic form of algae.

To treat this disease we recommend;  Paracide Green or Easy Treat Ich

Popeye

It is important to realize that some varieties of goldfish have eyes which naturally protrude, like the Moor, the Celestial, and the Water Bubble Eye. If your goldfish is a juvenile, it is possible that its eyes are developing into their adult configuration, perhaps to your surprise. (Sometimes, a goldfish will not develop telescopic eyes until it is two years of age).

Pop-eye, however, is a condition which causes a goldfish's eyes to protrude away from the goldfish's head in an unusual way. Pop-eye is usually caused by fluid build up behind the eyes due to bacterial infections or tuberculosis.

To treat this disease we recommend;  Treat with medicated food, we prefer Jungle Medicated Food, in addition use Easy Treat Bacterial

Septicemia

Redness on goldfish, bloodstreaks on skin without apparent injury, especially blood streaks in the fins, inflamed blood vessels in the skin and at fin bases stand out, small hemorrhages around eyes, loss of appetite, sluggish behavior are all signs of Septicemia in your goldfish.

Septicemia can come as a result of other conditions or illness (such as finrot) or it can result instead from dirty water.

When the bacteria enter the goldfish's circulatory system, they are able to travel throughout the goldfish's body very quickly through the blood stream, causing damage to body tissue, blood vessel, and the fish's heart. This often results in internal bleeding. Because these fluids may fill the goldfish's abdomen dropsy may also result. This is a very serious condition and must be treated immediately.  Since the infection is INSIDE the goldfish at this point the medication must also be delivered INSIDE.  See your veterinarian for injections of antibiotics.  If, like most of us you cannot find a vet to work on fish then....

To treat this disease we recommend;  Jungle Medicated Food and Easy Treat Bacterial

Many water borne antibiotics available at pet stores,  such as Furazone Green, can be administered via entubation, to get the medication INSIDE the goldfish.

Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis is becoming a more common disease in recent years, and is an especially serious disease. By the time symptoms appear, the goldfish has already been harboring this internal infection for some time. It is very contageous, and in some cases, it is also transmittable and dangerous to humans. A goldfish may exhibit wasting or other loss of weight for no apparent reason. A tubercular goldfish has a normal appetite, but as internal organs become damaged by the disease, the goldfish slowly loses weight to the point where the goldfish's head will appear arrow headed or too big for the body.

If a nodule forms under the goldfish's eye, it may protrude, causing pop-eye. These nodules on other parts of the body develop into ulcers.

The utmost care must be given to prevent the spread of this disease to humans or to other goldfish. Unfortunately, tuberculosis is a very difficult to treat disease, and is most often fatal.

To treat this disease we recommend;  Injectible antibiotics by your veterinarian or water borne antibiotics via entubation.

Wasting Or Arrow Head Disease

It is important to determine if your goldfish is feeding normally. Most often, goldfish are good eaters and are not too shy about eating. However, a more timid goldfish may be at a loss during feeding time, and so your goldfish should be observed during feeding to make sure each gets a share of the food. In general, if a goldfish is smaller than his tankmates, he may not get as much food. If a fancy goldfish is kept with more common varieties, the fancy goldfish may be unable to acquire adequate food. Extra effort on the part of the keeper can often alleviate this problem, with separation for the goldfish in question if necessary.

To treat this disease we recommend;  Clout or  Trichloracide or  Paracide Green  if brought on by parasites.  Neocide 3 or Easy Treat Bacterial if a bacterial issue.
